Educators are Just as Talented as Other Professionals

I wrote my book, #UnleashTalent, because I have always believed that every single person has their own set of unique talents. Over the years though, I noticed that some educators view themselves as less than in comparison to other professionals. One of my greatest passions in life is to help educators recognize the talents they have growing wildly from within.

I often hear educators share their profession, with the implication that they are not as successful or intelligent as other people. During a recent learning opportunity I attended, I overheard a very interesting conversation between several educators. There was an incredible mixer opportunity that was provided for people of various professions to attend: Education, business, tech, medical and beyond. When I walked to the educators in the room, they said they would be too apprehensive to share their expertise in a room filled with people who were “so much more knowledgeable than them.”

Every time I hear someone say, “I am just an educator,” over-explain why they chose the field of education, in comparison to other fields, or feel that they are not as intelligent as other professionals as a whole, I want to cry. Yes, I know, I am becoming overly sensitive to this idea.

But, I would rather be overly sensitive than to come to the conclusion that we as educators are “less than” anyone else. I know that many of these thoughts and conclusions appear as a result of society and how some outside education speak about our field. I myself have also felt small when people questioned why I chose education and why I continue to love it as much as I do.

Nevertheless, I am here to remind you that you are… Just as talented, just as hard working, just as creative and just as brilliant as anyone and everyone else. You are infinitely WORTHY.

I continue to see, believe, and know that we as educators are abundantly talented. We have talent pouring from our souls, and each day we have the distinctive privilege to learn from the diverse talents of students. We are talent; We exude talent.

Take it! Own it!

Therefore, The next time you have the chance to share what you do for a living or have the opportunity to share your expertise with others- absolutely, positively TAKE IT AND OWN IT! Do not be ashamed of who you are. Be proud. You are an educator, and a good one at that.

As Roy T. Bennett says, “Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you can imagine.”

After all, due to the work you do, you give back to…

  • The world in ways that you cannot fully see or fathom.
  • Kids who look up to you and what you represent.
  • Future generations- People who you have not even met yet.
  • PEOPLE!

You are talented and what you give to the world, is never ending.

As educators, we are not less than anyone. We are talented. We are multifaceted. We are unique. We are us.
